Visit the Gold Coast in early 2016 and you could be lucky enough to explore the region’s largest arts and cultural celebration – Bleach* Festival.
The iconic southern Gold Coast event, held in March over three weekends, will feature contemporary live music, outdoor and indoor art exhibitions, various film events, street parties, theatre and heaps more.
It’s a quirky, whimsical (and very popular) event, which has attracted more than 140,000 attendees and about a thousand artists over it’s three year history.
Handily, Bleach* Festival coincides with the annual launch of the World Surfing Tour, the Quiksilver and Roxy Pro. So, if you do decide to stay locally, you’ll be spoilt for choice.
If a spot of rest and relaxation sounds pretty tempting right about now, why not check out The Grand Apartments in Labrador? You’ll be located a short drive from all of the festival favourites and, of course, heaps of other awesome attractions, including Australia’s best theme parks, world-class dining and leisure precincts and a distinctly laid back vibe you’ll struggle to find anywhere else.
Bleach* Festival is a great example of this casual atmosphere in action. A cohesive, yet somehow chaotic, affair, Bleach impresses year on year with its thought provoking displays and eccentric acts. It’s something different entirely, and an experience well worth undertaking.
The festival’s organisers describe Bleach* as a travelling road show, a festival and a canvas for Gold Coast culture; and the description rings true. As a welcome bonus, many of the festival’s activities, acts and other facets are located beachside, along Currumbin Beach and other waterside locales, scattered across the Gold Coast’s sunny shores. You couldn’t ask for a better backdrop, really.
For an example of what’s in store for Bleach * 2016, let’s take a quick look back at last year’s amazing offering.
Bleach* 2015, held from March 6, opened with a cracker launch at Coolangatta and Kirra, complete with a massive costumed mullet meet and greet (yes, you heard right…), a show by THE ANTS and an Indigenous performance, recognising Aboriginal owners of the land.
Also held across the weekends were silent film nights, public picnics, complete with live entertainment, and Sequins and Sinew; a magnificent combination of acrobatics, aerial arts and dance. Additionally, art exhibitions are an integral part of Bleach*, with excellent examples of local talent, and works from farther afield, available to peruse largely at your leisure.
Meanwhile, just up the road at Tugun, the Tooloona Street Festival was serving up a storm in 2015; featuring food stalls, live music, cooking demonstrations, local restaurants and an array of cool kids workshops to keep the little tackers happy.
Really though, it’s difficult to highlight what could and should be on at Bleach* 2016 – its dedicated organisers surprise and delight year on year and 2016 will very likely be no different.
Check www.bleachfestival.com.au for more information about the festival, which is an initiative of Connecting Southern Gold Coast.
While staying in the region, you can also enjoy a massive range of surfing, scuba diving, wakeboarding, jetskiing and other waterborne experiences found just a stone’s throw from your accommodation. Combine pristine beaches, top-rated dining and leisure venues and a decidedly laid-back atmosphere, and you won’t find a more appealing holiday location than the Gold Coast, whether you’re looking for a romantic getaway, family escape or sneaky sojourn.
