But about that trip back in time – you’ve really got to check out the Gold Coast Renaissance Faire, which is held at Pratten Park, Broadbeach from May 2-3. Just 20 minutes drive from The Grand Apartments, it’s well worth a day out.

The Faire features an enticing, thorough theatrical recreation of a 16th century Elizabethan market, complete with stage performances, authentic craft, food, drink and costumed performers.

Visitors are encouraged to wear period costumes, but there’s no pressure, and you can even pick up a new costume on entry if you really want to get into the spirit of the quirky festival.

A family friendly event, the Faire’s thrilling musketeer swashbuckling, archery competition and School of Fencing will provide more than enough action for those who like some excitement alongside their theatre. General tickets at the gate are $12.95, but family passes, and pensioner concessions, are also available.

If time travelling’s not quite your flavour, you’d be mad to miss Mental as Anything.

These well-travelled Aussie rockers formed in the late 70s and have been belting out their addictive anthems ever since.

A great night out - Mental as Anything

A great night out – Mental as Anything

Today’s Mental as Anything line-up features Martin Plaza on guitar/vocals, Greedy ‘Andrew’ Smith, vocalist and keyboarder, Martin Cilia, vocalist/guitarist, Zoltan Budai on bass and Jacob Cook on the drums, and they’re a killer combination. Their consistent touring schedule and glowing reviews are testament to that.

They’re playing at the Southport Yacht Club, just down the road from The Grand, in Macarthur Parade, at 8pm on the 7th of May, from 5pm to 7.30pm. The all ages show costs a very reasonable $59 for non-members, and tickets can be purchased directly from the club by calling 07 5591 3500. Make a night of it by enjoying the club’s buffet overlooking the waterfront before you see the show.

After experiencing a maelstrom of medieval life, or some tantalising tunes, you might be feeling like a cocktail, or maybe a local craft beer, during your stay. Luckily, you’ve got the beautiful Broadwater, which stretches from Runaway Bay, Paradise Point, Labrador, south to Southport, about three minutes north of Surfers Paradise.

It’s sandy shores are popular during the day, but the Broadwater also offers a great spot to relax and soak up the Gold Coast’s balmy weather and buzzing atmosphere.

Glass Dining & Lounge Bar, located at Seaworld Drive, Main Beach, offers breathtaking views, relaxed ambience and a positively massive wine selection. The perfect spot for a  tipple, or a meal. Additionally, the bar usually offers performances by brilliant local musicians plucking the strings for your pleasure. Bliss!

A stone’s throw further south at Tedder Avenue, Main Beach, you’ll find Chill Dining and Wine Bar – and you’ll be glad you did. As well as award winning contemporary dining, fine wine and personable service, you’ll find all your favourite classic cocktails, and a few off-the-wall offerings.

For example, the Gin-ninja shakes things up a bit with a heady mix of Hendricks gin, Midori and lemon juice, shaken with muddled mint and cucumber and served over crushed ice. And that’s just a taste of their extensive selection.

Another relaxed locale located smack-bang on the Broadwater is Omeros Bros Seafood Restaurant. It’s a multi award winner and, some may say, a Gold Coast institution. Frosty beer, a large wine list, top-quality local seafood and a truly inspirational layout make this a must-see destination for visiting foodies.
